High Elastic Pressure Immobilization Bandage Indicating Snake Bite Bandage

High Elastic

Indication bandage

Introduction

The snake bite bandage (also called a pressure immobilization bandage) is a specialized first aid tool used to slow the spread of venom after a snake bite, particularly from elapids (e.g., cobras, taipans, and Australian venomous snakes). It is NOT a tourniquet—its purpose is to apply firm, even pressure without cutting off blood flow.

How It Works

  1. Pressure Application – The elastic bandage is wrapped tightly (but not too tight) over the bite site and along the affected limb to reduce lymphatic drainage, delaying venom movement.

  2. Immobilization – The bandage helps keep the limb still, as movement can speed up venom circulation.

  3. Buys Time – This method does not neutralize venom but helps extend the window for medical treatment.

Key Features of the Snake Bite Bandage

✔ Extra-10cm wide elastic fabric for broad pressure coverage.
✔ Firm but stretchable – Should allow a finger to slip underneath when wrapped.
✔ No constriction – Unlike a tourniquet, it must not stop blood flow.
✔ Often marked with tension indicators for proper application.

When & How to Use It?

Ideal for: Neurotoxic snake bites (e.g., cobras, coral snakes, black mambas).
Not for: Viper bites (e.g., rattlesnakes, adders), where pressure may worsen tissue damage.

Application Steps:

  1. Keep the victim calm (movement spreads venom faster).

  2. Wrap from the bite site upward, covering the entire limb.

  3. Apply firm pressure (similar to a sprain bandage).

  4. Splint the limb if possible to restrict movement.

  5. Seek emergency medical help immediately.

Why Carry a Snake Bite Bandage?

  • Critical in remote areas where antivenom may take hours to reach.

  • Lightweight & compact – Fits in hiking/outdoor first aid kits.

  • Also useful for: Spider bites (e.g., funnel-web) or other envenomations.

Warning: Never cut, suck, or ice a snake bite—proper bandaging + fast hospital care is key!
