The decompression needle also called thoracentesis needle, is a medical device designed to relieve life-threatening pressure buildup in body cavities, most commonly in the chest (tension pneumothorax) or brain (intracranial pressure).
Tension Pneumothorax:
A collapsed lung with trapped air compressing the heart and lungs, often caused by trauma, lung disease, or mechanical ventilation.
Emergency needle decompression involves inserting the needle into the second intercostal space (mid-clavicular line) or fifth intercostal space (anterior axillary line) to release air and restore breathing.
Other Applications:
Pericardial Tamponade: Draining fluid around the heart in emergencies.
Intracranial Pressure (ICP): Rarely, to relieve severe brain swelling.
Large-Bore & Long needle (14G, 3.25"): Allows rapid air/fluid escape.
Catheter-Over-Needle Design: The needle is removed, leaving a flexible catheter in place to prevent lung re-injury.
Sterile & Single-Use: Prevents infection.
Locate the insertion site (e.g., 2nd intercostal space).
Clean the area and insert the needle at a 90° angle until a "hiss" of escaping air is heard.
Remove the needle, leaving the catheter secured with a valve or dressing.

Decompression needles can be a lifesaving tool in emergency medical situations, they can be packed in first aid kits.
