Introduction

The decompression needle also called thoracentesis needle, is a medical device designed to relieve life-threatening pressure buildup in body cavities, most commonly in the chest (tension pneumothorax) or brain (intracranial pressure).

Key Uses:

1. Tension Pneumothorax:

• A collapsed lung with trapped air compressing the heart and lungs, often caused by trauma, lung disease, or mechanical ventilation.

• Emergency needle decompression involves inserting the needle into the second intercostal space (mid-clavicular line) or fifth intercostal space (anterior axillary line) to release air and restore breathing.

2. Other Applications:

• Pericardial Tamponade: Draining fluid around the heart in emergencies.

• Intracranial Pressure (ICP): Rarely, to relieve severe brain swelling.

Procedure Steps (Tension Pneumothorax Example):

1. Locate the insertion site (e.g., 2nd intercostal space).

2. Clean the area and insert the needle at a 90° angle until a "hiss" of escaping air is heard.

3. Remove the needle, leaving the catheter secured with a valve or dressing.
